Paper collection and technology award winners

Yesterday, the European Recovered Paper Council announced the winners of the fourth European Paper Recycling awards. Two organisations awarded for innovative efforts.
First winner in the category Technology Improvement and R&D was Voith Paper with a new technology called LowEnergyFlotation, that significantly reduces the energy requirements needed to remove printing ink from paper fibres. The newly developed injectors are at the heart of the product. Together with the modified pumps, they enable energy consumption to be reduced by up to 50% in the flotation.

The winner of the category Information and Education was the Alcorcón municipality in Spain. Their project improves paper and board collection by distributing paper bins in all schools in the district. The project aims to increase both the amount of paper collected as well as environmental awareness among children.

The well-attended ceremony took place at the European Parliament.

The European Recovered Paper Council (ERPC) was set up after the successful launch of the
first ‘European Declaration on Paper Recovery’ as an industry own-initiative in November 2000
with the aim to monitor the progress made towards meeting the targets set out in the European
Declaration.
